Habitat: Native warm season grasses with forbs, switchgrass, cool season grasses with legumes, food plots, and wetlands.

Hunting is by bow and arrow or shotgun. Non-toxic shot is required.

A windshield card must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard. You must report your harvest and hunter trips via the system, even if you did not hunt, by February 15.

Rabbits

Available at this site. Statewide regulations apply, except:

  • Requires a lottery-based Free Upland Game Permit that you can apply online for between Aug 1 – Aug 31. Harvest reporting materials will be mailed to successful permit holders via the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS). You must report your harvest to INHS by February 15th to avoid the loss of hunting privileges for the following year.
  • Only 1 hunting party, consisting of the permit holder and no more than 3 companions, will be allowed each day. 
  • Non-toxic shot is required.
  • Only flu flu arrows may be used by bow and arrow hunters; broadheads are not allowed 
  • Hunters must wear a cap and upper outer garment of solid blaze orange of at least 400 square inches. 
  • Hunting is permitted on the 1st and 2nd day of the statewide upland game season and on each subsequent Wednesday and Saturday in Nov, and on each Thursday and Sunday in Dec. Closing date is Dec 24.
