Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 283
  • Habitat: Located on a rugged bluff near the Mississippi River with steep terrain covered with upland forest and native hilltop prairies.

Site Specific Regulations

  • Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site.
  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • Site requires use of windshield card, displayed on vehicle dashboard, to report hunting effort and harvest by 15 February.
  • Use Hunt Planner to find hunting seasons open at this site.
  • Ground fires and camping not permitted
  • Area is closed to non-hunters all day during deer firearm seasons and until 1 pm during turkey firearm seasons. Exception: A supervising non-hunting adult may occupy a young hunter during youth firearm deer season.
  • Species-specific rules:

Deer

  • Limited number of hunters per day
  • Portable, non-piercing tree stands may be used but must be removed each day.
  • Archery
    • State regulations, but closed during firearm deer seasons.
  • Firearm
    • Hunters must obtain a Special Hunt Area permit.
      • Special Hunt Area permits are not valid anywhere else in the county.
      • County permits are not valid for the Special Hunt Area.
  • Youth Firearm
    • A supervising adult who does not hunt may accompany a young hunter during youth season.
    • For youth deer seasons, only Jo Daviess Co. permit holders that contact the site office will be issued a youth season free site hunting permit.
  • Muzzleloader
    • Open only during the second portion of muzzleloader season.
    • Hunting requires a Special Hunt Area permit which is not valid anywhere else in the county, and county permits are not valid for the special hunt area.
    • A muzzleloader deer hunting permit is required. The permit is invalid during the 2nd portion of the firearm deer season.
  • Special CWD Season
    • Requires a Special Hunt Area permit which is not valid anywhere else in the county, and county permits are not valid for the special hunt area.

Turkey

Area is closed to non-hunters until 1 pm during youth and spring firearm turkey seasons, except a supervising adult who does not hunt may accompany a young hunter.

  • Fall Archery
    • Closed during all firearm deer seasons
  • Fall Shotgun
    • Requires a valid county permit
    • Closed during firearm deer seasons
  • Spring
    • Requires a Special Hunt Area permit. These permits are not valid anywhere else in the county. County permits are not valid for the Special Hunt Area.
    • Limited number of hunters per day
  • Youth Spring
    • Only Jo Daviess Co. permit holders that contact the site office will be issued a youth season free site hunting permit (windshield card).

Waterfowl

  • Waterfowl hunting not permitted.

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels
    • Must use a shotgun or bow and arrow
    • Must obtain a windshield card and the permit must be displayed and visible under the vehicle windshield and the pocket portion must be in possession while hunting at the site. Hunters must report their annual harvest online by Feb 15 even if the hunter did not hunt or forfeit hunting privileges at the site for the following year.

Upland Birds

  • Upland bird hunting not permitted.

Furbearers

  • Trapping
    • Furbearer trapping not permitted.
  • Hunting
    • Statewide regulations
    • Rimfire rifles .22 caliber and smaller may be used from sunset to sunrise.
    • Furbearer hunting closed during Firearm Deer Season
      • Hunters with a valid, unfilled firearm deer permit for the hunt area may take coyotes during legal hours of the firearm deer season. Otherwise, the use of shotgun slugs to take furbearing mammals is prohibited on state sites.
    • Coyote and striped skunk season coincides with the statewide fox season.
