Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 5,000
  • Habitat: Rolling terrain with steep hills and deep hollows, covered with mature timber of oak-hickory type. The entire area is supplied well with water from springs interspersed throughout the area. Agricultural leases maintain open areas to provide habitat diversity. 

Site Specific Regulations

  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • Site requires use of windshield card, which must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard, to report hunting effort and harvest by 15 February.
  • Use Hunt Planner to find hunting seasons open at this site.
  • Hunters may leave stands unattended September 15 – January 31. Stands must be legibly marked with hunter’s name, address and telephone number.
  • Hunting opportunities at Pere Marquette State Park are offered on three separate areas. The EAST “OPEN” area is east of Graham Hollow Road. The WEST “OPEN” area is located along Schallenberg Lane. The “GROUP CAMP” areas surround the camps in the northern portion of the park (see map and additional regulations below).
  • No hunting will be permitted within 300 feet of roadways, developed recreation areas or residences.
  • No target or trap shooting is allowed.

Deer

  • Archery
    • Hunting is allowed in the “open” areas only.
    • Requires site specific permit. Permit applications are available in March at the site office or online. A public drawing is held at the site office on the first working day in April.
    • Season begins the week after the camps close
    • Hunting is limited to four seasons, each approximately one week. Season begins the first week day after camps close. Special Permit Area is divided into 3 hunting areas (Piasa, Ouatoga, and Potawatomi Camp Areas).
    • A total of 48 hunters (4 hunters per area per season) will be selected by a random drawing, held at the Visitor Center on the first working day in April.
    • Applications are available in March at the visitor center or online at the IDNR website.
    • Dates for each of the 4 seasons change annually, so please check with site staff for annual dates
    • Hunters with a valid archery turkey permit may harvest a turkey during their hunt.
  • Firearm, Muzzleloader, Youth Firearm
    • Statewide regulations
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only

Turkey

  • Fall Archery
    • Archery deer hunters with a valid turkey permit may harvest a turkey during their hunt
  • Youth
    • Statewide regulations apply.
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only
  • Spring
    • Statewide regulations apply.
    • Hunters must select “PMSP” on their their Turkey Permit Application rather than “Jersey County”
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only
  • Fall Shotgun
    • Statewide regulations apply.
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only

Waterfowl

  • Waterfowl hunting not permitted.

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels
    • Season opens after Labor day
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only
  • Rabbits
    • Rabbit hunting not permitted.

Upland Birds

  • Dove
    • Statewide regulations apply.
    • Hunting is allowed in the “OPEN” areas only
    • Non-toxic shot required

Furbearers

  • Hunting
    • Site specific permit required
    • Rimfire rifles .22 caliber and smaller may be used from sunset to sunrise.
    • Furbearer hunting closed during Firearm Deer Season
      • Hunters with a valid, unfilled firearm deer permit for the hunt area may take coyotes during legal hours of the firearm deer season. Otherwise, the use of shotgun slugs to take furbearing mammals is prohibited on state sites.
    • Coyote and striped skunk season coincides with the statewide fox season.

  • Trapping
    • Site specific permit required
    • Permits are issued via a public drawing held in conjunction with the drawing at the Mississippi River SFWA site office.
    • Must have a current trapping license and habitat stamp
