Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 1,191
  • Habitat: Mix of nearly equal proportions of forest, shrubs, grassland and cropland. Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site. These activities are necessary to improve and develop high quality wildlife habitat.

Site Specific Regulations

  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • Site requires use of windshield card for all hunting opportunities, displayed on vehicle dashboard, to report hunting effort and harvest by 15 February.
  • Use Hunt Planner to find hunting seasons open at this site.
  • Portable tree stands can be left on site from September 15-January 31, but must be removed before the last date.
    • Stands must have the hunter’s windshield card number displayed OR owner’s name, address, and telephone number

Deer

  • Archery
    • Hunting is open daily from October 1 to the opening of the controlled pheasant season.
    • Open ONLY on Monday and Tuesday during controlled pheasant season
    • After January 1, hunting is open daily to the end of the statewide season.
    • Portable tree stands and ground blinds must be removed daily, except:
      • Stands/blinds may be left on site from September 15 – January 31
      • Unattended stands/blinds must be labeled with the following:
        • owner’s name, address, and telephone number OR
        • site assigned identification number (windshield card number)
    • Only one tree stand or ground blind is allowed per deer permit holder
  • Firearm and Muzzleloader deer hunting is not permitted.

Turkey

  • Seasons follows Northern Zone regulations unless otherwise noted.
  • Spring
    • Requires site-specific permit obtained through the statewide permit lottery.
    • Hunting is open all days during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd periods, but only Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday) during 4th and 5th periods.
  • Fall
    • Archery hunting is open daily from October 1 to the opening of the controlled pheasant season
    • Open ONLY on Monday and Tuesday during controlled pheasant season
    • After January 1 hunting is open every day to the end of the statewide season
    • Fall shotgun season is not permitted
  • Youth-Spring
    • Requires a valid McLean County Spring Youth Turkey Permit.
    • Site drawing for hunting locations will be held on the Tuesday before the youth hunting season, at 10 am at the park office.
    • Site is limited to four youth hunters. 
    • Each permitted youth hunter is required to be accompanied in the field by a parent/guardian or responsible adult who possesses a valid Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) Card. The adult and/or adult caller is not allowed to hunt but may accompany the youth hunter as a caller or observer. The supervising adult shall be criminally liable for the actions of the youth in the site and shall be subject to the criminal penalties provided by law.

Waterfowl

  • Waterfowl hunting is not permitted.

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels
    • Statewide regulations, except closed during controlled pheasant season and all deer season.
    • Shotgun use only.
  • Rabbits
    • Statewide regulations, except hunting only open on Mondays and Tuesdays, closed on Wednesday through Sunday, during Controlled Pheasant Season.
    • Open all days after Controlled Pheasant season to the end of the North Upland Game Zone season.
    • Hours are 8 am-4 pm.
    • When pursuing Pheasant, quail, or partridge all hunting must be done with shotguns, archery equipment (flu flu arrows only), or falcons.
    • Hunters must use shot size No. 5 or smaller lead or non-toxic shot size ballistically equivalent to No. 5 lead or smaller.
    • Hunters under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
    • Non-hunters are not allowed in the upland game management units except when assisting with handicap hunters.

Upland Birds

When pursuing Pheasant, quail, or partridge all hunting must be done with shotguns, archery equipment (flu flu arrows only), or falcons.

  • Quail and Hungarian Partridge
    • Rare on site
    • Windshield card required
    • Season: Opens daily from the Monday following the end of the controlled pheasant season through the close of the statewide North Upland Game Zone season.
    • Hunting hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
    • Statewide limits apply to both species.
    • All hunting must be done with shotguns or bow and arrow.
      • Flu flu arrows only
      • Hunters must use shot size No. 5 or smaller lead or non-toxic shot size ballistic equivalent to No. 5 lead or smaller
  • Pheasant
    • Season: Opens daily from the Monday following the end of the controlled pheasant season through the close of the statewide North Upland Game Zone season.
    • Hunting hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
    • Statewide limits apply
    • All hunting must be done with shotguns or bow and arrow.
      • Hunters must use shot size No. 5 or smaller lead or non-toxic shot size ballistic equivalent to No. 5 lead or smaller
      • Flu flu arrows only
  • Controlled Pheasant Hunting
    • Hunting is for released pen raised birds.
    • Online reservations required
    • Season opens on Wednesday before the first Saturday of November
      • Open Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday)
      • Closed Christmas Day
    • Check-in time: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
    • Hunting Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
      • Thanksgiving Day hours are 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
    • Limit: 2 pheasants either sex
      • No other species may be taken during the controlled pheasant hunt.
    • All hunting must be done with shotguns or bow and arrow (flu flu arrows only)
      • Hunters must use shot size No. 5 or smaller lead or non-toxic shot size ballistic equivalent to No. 5 lead or smaller.
    • Pheasant(s) must be tagged with a state tag prior to removal from the area.
    • Hunters under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
    • Non-hunters are not allowed in the upland game management units, except when assisting with handicap hunters.
  • Controlled Youth Pheasant Hunting
    • Hunting is for released pen raised birds.
    • Online reservations required
    • Hunters age 10-17
      • Hunters under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult hunter.
    • Season:
      • Second Saturday following the opening weekend of the statewide pheasant season
      • last Sunday in November
      • last Saturday in December
    • Check-in time: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
      • Standby hunters are accepted by lottery drawing after 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
    • Hunting Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
      • Thanksgiving Day hours are 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
    • Limit: 2 pheasants either sex
      • No other species may be taken during the controlled pheasant hunt.
    • All hunting must be done with shotguns or bow and arrow (flu flu arrows only)
      • Hunters must use shot size No. 5 or smaller lead or non-toxic shot size ballistic equivalent to No. 5 lead or smaller.
    • Pheasant(s) must be tagged with a state tag prior to removal from the area.
  • Dove Management Fields Only
    • Season: September 1- October 15
      • Stake assignments on first come, first served basis. Windshield Card Required.
      • Hunting Hours: 12:00 p.m. (noon) – 5:00 p.m
  • Dove: Site Wide (not dove management fields)
    • Season: September 6 – October 15
      • Windshield Card Required
      • Hunting Hours:
        • September 1 – 5: 12:00pm – 5:00pm
        • September 6 – October 15: Statewide hours
    • Non-toxic shot is required
  • Upland Falconry
    • Site specific permit required. Contact site office prior to hunting
      • Permit must be returned and harvest reported by February 15
      • Failure to return permit or report harvest will result in loss of hunting privileges at this site the following year
    • Season: October 1 through two days before Controlled Pheasant season.
    • Falconry hunters may harvest cock and hen pheasant, hungarian partridge, bobwhite quail, and rabbit.
    • Statewide limits apply
  • Woodcock
    • Hours: Sunrise to 4:00pm
    • Windshield Card Required
    • Season: Opens statewide and closes two days before opening of Controlled Pheasant season.

Furbearers

  • Hunting
    • Coyote:

      • Season: runs concurrently with site archery deer season
        • Open daily from October 1st to the opening of the controlled pheasant season
        • Open ONLY on Monday and Tuesday during controlled pheasant season

    • Fox (red and grey), Opossum, Raccoon, and Skunk:
      • Site specific permit (lottery drawing) and Windshield Card required
        • Two (2) site specific permits issued via lottery
        • Lottery drawing is held the 2nd Sunday in December, at 10:30 am
        • Applicants must submit name and address to the site prior to the drawing
        • Each permittee will be assigned 2 days to hunt
      • Hunting parties limited to 4 people (permit holder and 3 companions)
        • All hunters must have a Windshield Card
      • Season: open the second Monday in December through February 15.
      • Night hunting only (sunset to sunrise)
      • Statewide limits apply
  • Trapping
    • Statewide regulations in the North Zone.
    • Trappers are accepted by lottery drawing at 10:30 am at the Park Office on the first Tuesday before the opening of the North Zone trapping season. No more than 2 persons may enter drawing on a single card. Applicants must submit name and address to the site prior to the drawing.
    • Must use only Egg traps D-P (Dog proof) traps, box traps, cage traps and traps of similar design may be used for land sets.
    • Legal water sets may be used.
