Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 148
  • Habitat: Topography is rolling to gently rolling. Some acerage is in ag fields, with the rest in native grasses and forbs, hardwood trees and shrubs, and a constructed wetland. Two small streams, bordered by a riparian zone, meander through the site.

Site Specific Regulations

  • Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site.
  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • Use Hunt Planner to find hunting seasons open at this site.
  • All hunting must be done with a shotgun or bow and arrow.
  • Species-specific rules:

Deer

  • Archery
    • Statewide regulations except archery season closes at the end of shooting hours the day before North Zone Upland season opens and reopens at the close of the Upland season.
    • Archery hunters must register on site with name and date prior to hunting. Registration will be at the site parking lot.
    • One portable non-piercing tree stands or ground blinds which are legibly labeled (with hunters name, address and phone number) may be set up beginning Sept 15 and left unattended until January 31.
    • No more than 2 hunters can hunt concurrently at Little Rock Creek HA. Hunters must note number of signed-in hunters and observe first-come first-serve basis for eligibility to hunt.
    • Hunters must sign out and record their harvest upon completion of the hunt at the check station or sign-out box.
  • Firearm
    • No firearm deer hunting allowed

Turkey

Waterfowl

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels

  • Rabbits
    • Hunting will be permitted on the first and second day of the statewide upland game season and on each subsequent Wednesday and Saturday in November, and on each Thursday and Sunday in December, through December 24.
    • Requires a site permit. Free permits must be applied for and are issued through a lottery drawing at Springfield. Further information can be found in the Illinois Hunting Digest. One permit will be issued for each day of the hunt.
    • Each permit holder may be accompanied by 3 partners.
    • Must wear a cap and upper garment of solid blaze orange of at least 400 square inches.
    • Must complete and return the harvest survey report to the IDNR by Feb 15.

Upland Birds

  • Cock Pheasant, Quail, and Hungarian Partridge
    • Hunting will be permitted on the first and second day of the statewide upland game season and on each subsequent Wednesday and Saturday in November, and on each Thursday and Sunday in December, through December 24.
    • Requires a site permit. Free permits for cock pheasant, quail, and Hungarian partridge must be applied for are issued through a lottery drawing at Springfield. Information is available in the Illinois Hunting Digest or 217-782-6384. One permit will be issued for each day of the hunt.
    • Each permit holder may be accompanied by 3 partners.
    • Must wear a cap and upper garment of solid blaze orange of at least 400 square inches.
    • Must complete and return the harvest survey report to the IDNR by Feb 15.

Furbearers

  • Trapping
    • A site-specific permit is required. One site trapping permit will issued annually for the Little Rock Creek Habitat Area. This permit will be issued through a lottery drawing held at Morrison Rockwood State Park.
    • No motorized access is permitted.
    • For land sets: only Egg traps, D-P ( Dog Proof) traps, box traps, cage traps, and traps of similar design may be used.
    • For water sets: only body-gripping traps (with a jaw spread of 5 inches or less), foothold traps (with a jaw spread of 4.5 inches or less) and square body-gripping traps (with a 10 inch jaw spread) may be used. Snares may be used for water sets.
    • All fur harvested belong to the permit holder for that trapping year.
    • The trapper must wear at least 400 inches of solid blaze orange while accessing the site.
