Site Characteristics

Huntable acres: 1,000

Habitat: Contains mesic floodplain forest, shrub swamp and pond communities once characteristic of the Mississippi River bottomlands of southern Illinois, but now nearly all cleared and drained. The primary source of the swamps’ water is runoff from west – facing wooded slopes and bluffs of the adjacent Pine Hills and from springs along the base of the bluffs. Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site, including prescribed burning.
