Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 1,082
  • Habitat: Area lies along the Embarras River and is characterized by wooded ravines, conifer plantations and native and restored prairie openings. Woodlands are the largest contiguous block of mature hardwoods in the Embarras River basin.

Site Specific Regulations

  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • Site requires use of windshield card that must be displayed on vehicle dashboard. Report of hunting effort and harvest must be submitted by 15 February.
  • Hunters may leave portable tree stands or ground blinds unattended from September 15-January 31. Stands must be legibly marked with owner’s name, address and phone number. Must be removed no later than January 31.

Deer

  • Archery
    • Statewide regulations apply.
  • Firearm
    • Requires site-specific permit obtained via the statewide lottery.
    • Area is closed to all hunting activity other than deer hunting during the firearm deer season.
  • Youth
    • Statewide regulations apply.

Turkey

  • Spring
    • Requires site-specific permit obtained via statewide lottery.
    • Youth Turkey open with Coles County Permit.
  • Fall Archery
    • Statewide regulations.
  • No Fall gun season.

Waterfowl

  • Statewide regulations.
  • Hunting limited to the Embarras River and its floodwaters in the wildlife management area. Permanent blinds and/or pits are prohibited.

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels
    • Statewide regulations.
  • Rabbits
    • Hunting hours are sunrise to 4 pm daily.

Upland Birds

  • Quail, Pheasant, Woodcock
    • Hunting hours are sunrise to 4 pm daily.
  • Dove
    • Hunting hours are 12-5 pm from September 1-5.
    • After September 5 hunting hours are from 12 pm-sunset.
    • Dove hunters must use non toxic shot, size 6 or smaller. 

Furbearers

  • Hunting
    • Statewide regulations
    • Rimfire rifles .22 caliber and smaller may be used from sunset to sunrise.
    • Furbearer hunting closed during Firearm Deer Season
      • Hunters with a valid, unfilled firearm deer permit for the hunt area may take coyotes during legal hours of the firearm deer season. Otherwise, the use of shotgun slugs to take furbearing mammals is prohibited on state sites.
    • Coyote and striped skunk season coincides with the statewide fox season.
    • Windshield Card required
  • Furbearer trapping is not permitted.
