Site Characteristics
- Huntable acres: 220
- Habitat: Edward Madigan State Park/James Helfrich Wildlife Propagation Center is comprised of a mixture of upland hardwood timber, wooded riparian/floodplain buffer (along Salt Creek), native warm-season grass and forb plantings, cool-season grass pasture, and agricultural fields. Active habitat management will be occurring throughout the year on the site.



Site Specific Regulations
- All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
- Upland permits are required to hunt upland game. Permits applications can be made online through the “Upland Game Hunting” section of the IDNR website. Application period is from August 1 – 31.
- Use Hunt Planner to find hunting seasons open at this site.
- Species-specific rules:
Deer
- No deer hunting permitted.
Turkey
- Youth Spring Turkey only open with statewide regulations
- Youth Spring Turkey permits are available through the Permit Lottery System by going online
- Youth Spring Turkey permits are site-specific, not county-based.
Waterfowl
- No waterfowl hunting permitted.
Squirrels/Rabbits
- Squirrels
- No squirrel hunting permitted.

- Requires upland permit
- Youth rabbit hunt is a 1 day season; date will be announced.
- Youth rabbit hunting hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- State regulations apply to rabbit hunting but the hours are from 9 a.m to 4 p.m.
Upland birds
- Dove
- September 1 – 5, site-specific permit is required.
- Hunting is from noon to 5 p.m.
- Non-toxic shot is required.
- Hunters must hunt within 10 feet of IDNR marked sites.
- September 6 – 30, quota of 30 hunters is filled on a first-come first-serve basis.
- Hunters must hunt within 10 feet of IDNR marked sites.
- Non-toxic shot is required.
- September 1 – 5, site-specific permit is required.
- Pheasant/Quail
- 1 day youth hunt to be announced. Hunting is from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Adult hunting is from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Requires upland permit
- Falconry dates to be announced. Season will close upon the harvest of 10 hen pheasants. Falconers must sign-in and sign-out daily.
Furbearers
- No furbearer hunting or trapping permitted.
