Site Characteristics

  • Huntable acres: 77
  • Habitat: Open grassland bisected by Coon Creek. Active grassland habitat management will be occurring on the site. These activities are designed to improve upland habitat.

Site Specific Regulations

  • All statewide hunting regulations apply at site unless noted hereafter.
  • All hunting must be done with shotgun or bow and arrow (flu flu arrows only)
  • Species-specific rules:

Deer

  • Deer hunting not permitted

Turkey

  • Turkey hunting not permitted

Waterfowl

  • Waterfowl hunting not permitted.

Squirrels/Rabbits

  • Squirrels
    • Squirrel hunting not permitted.
  • Rabbits
    • Statewide regulations, but requires a free upland game permit obtained via statewide lottery.
    • Permits are issued for the first and second day of the statewide upland game season and on each subsequent Wednesday and Saturday in November, and on each Thursday and Sunday in December, through December 24.
    • Only one hunting party, consisting of the permit holder and 3 hunting partners, will be allowed each day.
    • Harvest must be reported by February 15 (or two weeks after the season closes for those seasons ending after February 1) or permit holders will forfeit hunting privileges at sites requiring a Free Upland Permit the following year.

Upland Birds

  • Quail and Pheasant
    • Statewide regulations, but requires a free upland game permit obtained via statewide lottery.

Furbearers

  • Trapping
    • Requires site specific permit issued via lottery drawing and Free windshield card
      • Applicants must submit their name to the site office before the last Saturday in October. Site office: Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, 7251 Ranger Road. DeWitt, IL 61735. Phone: (217) 935-8722 Email: dnr.clintonlake@illinois.gov
      • Trapping permit must be in possession while trapping on the site.
      • Trappers must report their annual harvest online (even if the trapper did not trap) by February 15, or two weeks after the season closes for those seasons ending after February 1. Trappers shall forfeit their trapping privileges at the site for the following year if they fail to report by the above deadline.
    • Only Egg Traps, D-P (Dog-Proof) Traps, Lil Grizz Get’rz, box traps, cage traps, and traps of similar design may be used for land sets.
  • Hunting
    • Furbearer hunting not permitted.
