Learn to Hunt: Raccoon
This is a FREE 1-day Learn to Hunt: Raccoon workshop. This workshop is designed to teach new hunters: why, how, and where to hunt Raccoons in Illinois. Advanced registration is REQUIRED. You must be 18 years or older to attend.
Since these events will be entirely outdoors, if inclement weather is imminent, the event may be postponed to a later date. If this occurs, you will receive an email to the email address you provided during registration. Field events will follow all health and safety guidance in response to COVID-19.
The workshop will include Raccoon biology and management, raccoon hunting methods and regulations, the technology used (GPS collars for hounds), hound breeds, hunter etiquette and ethics, the use of fur, and a raccoon hunt with trained hounds and experienced handlers!
Food will be provided free to event participants by the Sorrento Coonhunters Association.
The Hunt: We will break into small groups at 5:30 PM and go on a brief evening raccoon hunt with hounds and experienced handlers in the nearby area. You will need clothing that is weather appropriate in December, including boots that can get wet. Please bring lights/headlamps if you have them. The handlers will turn the dogs out around 6 PM. With a little luck, you will get to see the hounds run and tree a raccoon or two. Note – participants will not be shooting at this event.
Bring Appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, a good light if you have it, and whatever else you need to be comfortable in the woods at night. Note – no firearms needed
